So you have caught a squirrel … now what?
You said you’d get those pesky squirrels by setting a trap and it worked! You got one, but you didn’t think
this through. Now that you have caught it, what are you going to do with it? Here are some solutions
for that furry critter in the cage.
If you are an animal lover that can’t bear the thought of the squirrel suffering, you can find a wooded
region and release him back into the wild. Make sure you follow the laws for squirrel relocation in your
area. Be sure to choose a drop off spot a minimum of three miles away from your home. If you are lucky,
the squirrel won’t find its way back to you. If the squirrel is lucky, it will survive in the wild. If
you are concerned about the squirrel returning and enacting vengeance for its relocation you might want a
more practical solution. You should think about being rid of your squirrel friend permanently.
You can kill it yourself any number of simple ways. Depending on your constitution, it can be shot, drowned, frozen,
and poisoned without ever taking it from the cage. Squirrels are considered a game animal in many countries so, if
you take care in its killing, you can eat it! You will find any number wonderful recipes for squirrel available on
the internet. Take care skinning it and you can even tan the hide to make yourself a pouch. If you don’t have stomach
to do the deed yourself, never fear! Want it taken off your hands for good? You can call animal control and they will
come and get it.
Depending on the area you live they might euthanize it or might try to find it a loving home. But either way,
you will never have to see it again! If there is no animal control in your area or money is no object you
may want to take it to your personal veterinarian.
You can choose to have your vet euthanize it as well. If you have become attached to it you can have it spayed or
neutered and release it back into your yard. Having the squirrel fixed can help quell the population problem but
unfortunately it won’t stop it from destroying things. A final thought is to eliminate the problem by squirrel
proofing your house eaves and putting up a squirrel feeder to keep the destruction on your lawn down. Then find
a nice tree to build a squirrel box in, release your new friend, and let him move into his new home right back in your yard!
